Colombia's President Warns 'I Will Take Up Arms Again' if United States Invades.

The US President and Colombia's president have escalated the volume in their verbal conflict, heightening tensions in their relations following American military units attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has drug factories and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.

Growing Tensions coupled with Accusations

Talking to reporters on Sunday, Trump threatened similar armed intervention against Bogotá, claiming the country is “very sick too” and governed by an unwell individual who enjoys creating narcotics and trafficking it to the United States."

Although Colombia stands as the globe's biggest producer of cocaine, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the illicit industry.

A Deteriorating Alliance

Colombia for decades served as a staunch collaborator of the US in the campaign against drug trafficking and enjoyed bipartisan support in the US capital, but relations have deteriorated dramatically following Trump was elected.

Its narcotics trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations such as one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, most of its former fighters laid down arms following a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Strong Response

Upon being questioned whether military intervention comparable to Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump replied: "It sounds good to me."

The Colombian leader, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the 1990s, rejected Trump's claims. "I am no an illegitimate leader and I am not a narco," he affirmed.

"He comments uninformed. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a message.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will transform into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. And if they detain me, which a large part of Colombians loves and respects, they will provoke the ‘jaguar’ of the people," the president cautioned.

From Insurgent to Leader

The president dedicated part of his youth as a member with the radical M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed that he never engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he took part in writing the nation's constitution over three decades ago subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá before being elected president.

"I pledged to abstain from using a gun ... but for the homeland I would take up arms again," he affirmed.

Reinforced Protection and Broad Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the president’s protection team was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump's stance, however, leaders from all sides of the political spectrum have rejected the threats of American military action targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Sanctions

The US revoked his travel authorization subsequent to he urged US military personnel to refuse unlawful commands. Later, in October, it placed economic restrictions on Petro, his spouse and several key allies.

Concurrently while America bolstered its troop levels in the Caribbean and striking alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted operations on maritime targets in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
