One ranking policeman who rushed to the assistance of a colleague that was assaulted by a knife attacker received the King's Commendation for Valor.

Sgt Tim Ansell grappled with 27-yr-old Jacob Brown after he pressed a weapon to the neck of his colleague Sergeant Marc Foster.

Brown began the violence as the policemen and their partner, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were conversing to a motorist after a vehicle incident in Whalley Range in July 2023.

Brown stabbed and slashed the two Sgt Ansell and Sergeant Foster prior to Police Constable Wolstencroft stunned him with a Taser.

"Officer attacked," PC Wolstencroft could be heard saying over his communication device.

Bodyworn and dashcam video shared by the agency showed Brown, wearing in dark clothing with a hood covering head, run up to Sgt Foster from behind with a blade pointed forward.

He collided with the policeman who tripped and dropped to the pavement, after which Sergeant Ansell stepped in and struggled to restrain him to the floor despite being repeatedly struck with the weapon.

Police Constable Wolstencroft pulled his stun gun and awaited a safe opportunity, ending the fight to an conclusion.

Sgt Ansell was heard stating: "Please provide something on my neck here, I'm bleeding in the neck."

Sgt Ansell sustained multiple open wounds to his throat and additional cuts to his limbs and torso, whereas Sgt Foster received slash wounds.

The department said Sgt Foster utilized his palms to stop his fellow officer's bleeding before medical personnel came.

The latest recognition arrives after the three officers won internal Valor Recognitions in fall 2023 and the police federation award from the local union branch in early 2024.

They additionally received a Regional Bravery Award in summer 2024.

"The responses of all three officers eventually protected themselves and resulted in no bystanders suffered any injuries."

Brown was given to an indefinite hospital order in April 2024, per the department.
