Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation Head James Comey Submits Innocent Plea to Accusations of Misleading US Legislators
Former FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and obstructing a legislative process.
His attorney submitted the plea on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.
Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would try to have the case terminated for multiple factors including that his the accused, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.
The former director was formally accused soon after the former president urged his top legal official to move forward against him.
Legal Proceedings
In court on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they intended to present several motions to throw out the case before a court case, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a US attorney was improperly assigned to take over the legal matter.
Mr Comey's case was first handled by the original attorney, who left his position under influence from Donald Trump after his examination into a different political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.
Legal Setting
James Comey appeared in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was joined by his partner, his wife and child Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the former government dismissed.
Upon hearing to the court recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in court on Wednesday, Mr Comey was asked if he understood the allegations.
"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the judge.
Previous Events
James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was fired about several months into Trump's first term as national leader. At the moment, he was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.
Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey caused a counter-response from Democrats when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.
Present Charges
The federal government claim Mr Comey provided false information to Congress during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They say he provided false information to the upper house by claiming he had not permitted a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to news outlets information about the FBI investigations.
Legal representatives also charge Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, block and delay" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.
Personal Comments
Via social media James Comey published to his social media after he was accused, he declared he was innocent and alleged Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".
"My family and I have understood for years that there are costs to standing up to Mr Trump," he commented. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a trial."
The accusations against James Comey emerged after the former president published on online platforms insisting on his top legal official, the attorney general, take legal action against the former director and additional individuals.
