Ex- Sergeant Major Imprisoned for Sexual Assault on 19-Year-Old Soldier

A former military sergeant has been ordered to serve six months in jail for sexually assaulting a teenage servicewoman who later ended her life.

Warrant Officer the former sergeant, in his forties, held down soldier the young woman and attempted to force a kiss on her in July 2021. She was located without signs of life five months later in her military accommodation at Larkhill, Wiltshire.

The convicted individual, who was judged at the legal proceedings in the Wiltshire region earlier, will be sent to a public jail and listed on sexual offenders list for seven years.

He told the convicted individual: "The victim had the courage and good sense to tell you to stop and instructed you to leave the area, but you continued to the point she considered she wouldn't be safe from you even if she retreated to her personal quarters."

He added: "The next morning, she disclosed the assault to her relatives, her acquaintances and her chain of command."

"After the complaint, the unit chose to address your behavior with light disciplinary measures."

"You underwent questioning and you acknowledged your conduct had been improper. You prepared a letter of apology."

"Your professional path proceeded unimpeded and you were eventually advanced to senior position."

Further Details

At the investigation into Gunner Beck's death, the investigating officer said military leadership influenced her to withdraw the complaint, and only reported it to a military leadership "after information had leaked."

At the moment, Webber was given a "light disciplinary meeting" with no further consequences.

The inquest was additionally informed that mere weeks after the incident the soldier had also been facing "persistent mistreatment" by another soldier.
