A defence minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been advised to avoid discussing secret information in all cars.

Security Advice for Defence Personnel

During a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese cars.

He said that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any car, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

This revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This broader security environment underscores the importance of strong measures and vigilance in all areas of official operations, from transport use to communication practices.
