The former president Threatens Removal of FIFA World Cup Games from the Boston area, Olympic Games from Los Angeles
Donald Trump has once again stated he would pressure FIFA to relocate upcoming World Cup games from a designated city based on the local political climate, with Massachusetts becoming the third targeted location to receive such warnings from the US president. Additionally, Trump suggested he would consider similar action against Los Angeles for the 2028 Summer Games due to possible security concerns.
Official Power and Possible Pressure
While Trump does not have direct legal authority to directly relocate either competition, he may apply pressure the respective governing bodies managing each event to change host cities.
Context of Remarks
The remarks were made during a media briefing with Javier Milei, who was present in the White House following the announcement of a massive bailout for the Latin American economy. Toward the close of the event, a media member questioned Trump about a latest public disturbance in downtown Boston where police officers were targeted and a police vehicle was set on fire. The reporter also questioned if such events could cause the removal of hosting duties for the larger football competition.
“I would take them away,” the former president remarked about the FIFA World Cup games, planned to be held at the Massachusetts arena. “The city's leader is ineffective … they're radical left, and activists are occupying sections of downtown. That’s a pretty big assertion, right?”
Urban Disturbances and Political Context
Street takeovers, a social media-driven phenomenon where participants congregate on public avenues during nighttime to conduct vehicular acrobatics, have emerged as a repeated nuisance in American cities since the Covid-19 pandemic closures. Current similar events have become aggressive in the state, including Boston. Yet, these gatherings are typically not seen as associated with any particular ideological group.
“When a mayor is failing, and I perceive there’s security risks, I will call Gianni [Infantino], who is outstanding, and suggest we should relocate it to a different city,” the former president said publicly. “He'd do that. He wouldn’t love doing it, but he'd agree. Readily, he would.”
FIFA Relationship
FIFA President has publicly acknowledged his efforts to be visibly associated with Trump before next year’s tournament, set to be staged in 11 cities across the America along with several in Canada and three in Mexico. The head has been present at multiple Oval Office events, arranged for Trump deliver the FIFA club award after the championship match, and has even rescheduled his FIFA's internal meeting to travel with Trump on a visit to the Middle East previously.
Previous Threats
This has not stopped, Trump from threatening the removal of soccer matches from different locations. On September 25, the Washington city and San Francisco faced parallel criticism, with Trump claiming both urban centers were “led by radical left lunatics who don’t know what they're managing,” while questioning the public safety of both areas and implying that games could be shifted.
FIFA Response
Victor Montagliani rebuffed Trump’s statements when he commented days later at a conference in England.
“It’s our competition, our responsibility, the organization determines these matters,” he declared. “Politely to national heads, soccer is bigger than political figures and football will endure their regime and their policies. That is the beauty of our game, that it is transcends a single person and beyond a nation.”
During the event, Trump’s reply to a query about Boston extended to a comparable warning regarding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“In case I thought LA was not prepared properly, I will relocate it to a different city if I had to,” he said. “Regarding that event I’d probably have to obtain a varying permission, but we would do that.”
The permission Trump mentioned would have to come through the Olympic governing body. The leader, Kirsty Coventry, was chosen to her role in March and has yet to appear together with Trump, but she indicated that she would like a discussion with him at eventually.
Additional Criticism
Trump also questioned California governor Newsom’s management of recent California fires, remarking that a parallel incident could result in the removal of the Games.
“In case he refuses to cooperate, we are going to have to be very tough,” he stated.
His statement was similarly direct for Boston.
“They better improve their situation,” Trump stated. “It's my message.”
