'The last stretch proved absolutely grueling': British duo complete extraordinary voyage in Australia after paddling across the vast Pacific

One more day. Another day battling through the pitiless slide. Another round of raw palms clutching relentless paddles.

However following over 15,000 kilometers across the ocean – an extraordinary 165-day expedition across the Pacific that included near brushes with cetaceans, failing beacons and chocolate shortages – the sea had one more challenge.

Strong 20-knot breezes off Cairns continuously drove their small vessel, their rowing boat Velocity, from the terra firma that was now frustratingly within reach.

Friends and family waited ashore as a planned midday arrival evolved into afternoon, subsequently 4pm, then twilight hours. Ultimately, at 6:42 PM, they arrived at the Cairns sailing club.

"Those last hours tested every fiber," Rowe stated, at last on firm earth.

"Gusts were driving us from the passage, and we truly doubted we would succeed. We drifted outside the navigational path and contemplated a final swim to land. To ultimately arrive, after talking about it for so long, seems absolutely amazing."

The Epic Journey Begins

The British pair – 28-year-old Rowe and 25-year-old Payne – pushed off from Lima, Peru in early May (an initial attempt in April was derailed by a rudder failure).

During 165 ocean days, they maintained 50 nautical miles daily, working as a team through daytime hours, one rowing alone at night while her crewmate slept just a few hours in a confined sleeping area.

Endurance and Obstacles

Nourished by 400kg of preserved provisions, a saltwater conversion device and an integrated greens production unit, the women counted on an unpredictable photovoltaic arrangement for a fraction of the power they've needed.

For much of their journey across the vast Pacific, they operated without navigation tools or signaling devices, making them essentially invisible, almost invisible to other vessels.

The duo faced nine-meter waves, traversed marine highways and weathered furious gales that, periodically, silenced all of their electronics.

Historic Accomplishment

Yet they continued paddling, one stroke after another, during intensely warm periods, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They established a fresh milestone as the initial female duo to paddle over the South Pacific, without breaks or external assistance.

Additionally they collected over eighty-six thousand pounds (A$179,000) supporting Outward Bound.

Life Aboard

The duo made every effort to stay connected with society away from their compact craft.

Around day one-forty, they declared a "cocoa crisis" – reduced to their final two portions with still more than 1,600km to go – but permitted themselves the luxury of opening one bar to celebrate England's Red Roses triumph in global rugby competition.

Individual Perspectives

Payne, from a landlocked part of Yorkshire, had not been at sea before her solo Atlantic crossing in 2022 achieving record pace.

She has now mastered another ocean. Yet there were periods, she conceded, when they doubted their success. As early as day six, a path over the planet's biggest sea seemed unachievable.

"Our energy was failing, the desalination tubes ruptured, yet after numerous mends, we managed a bypass and just limped along with little power throughout the remaining journey. Every time something went wrong, we simply exchanged glances and went, 'naturally it happened!' Still we persevered."

"Jess made an exceptional crewmate. What was great was that we worked hard together, we resolved issues as a team, and we consistently shared identical objectives," she said.

Rowe originates from Hampshire. Preceding her ocean conquest, she rowed the Atlantic, hiked England's South West Coast Path, ascended Mount Kenya and cycled across Spain. There might still be more.

"We shared such wonderful experiences, and we're enthusiastically preparing additional journeys collectively once more. Another teammate wouldn't have worked."
