Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
